Dr. Brian Meeker began his practice in Vinton in the fall of 1992, with 5 years of experience prior to that. Dr. Meeker and his wife raised their family of 4 children here and all graduated from the Vinton-Shellsburg School system. Dr. Meeker has recertified in Family Medicine 3 times and has earned the degree of Fellow which is the highest degree conferred by the specialty.
Dr. Meeker’s professional interests include pediatrics and emergency medicine, and early in his career he was a charter member and affiliate faculty for the state of Iowa’s Pediatric Advanced Life Support course. He also served as a member of the Iowa Affiliate Board for the American Heart Association. In Vinton, he has been Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics medical director of emergency services and chief of the medical staff for over a decade that has seen many innovations in care and services. His interest in emergency services also includes medical directorships of 5 ambulance services that serve Benton County, our 911 dispatch system, and essentially all first responder units. Dr. Meeker scored in the 99th percentile of his colleagues taking the emergency medicine exam for his board certification.
Dr. Meeker’s second medical interest is health promotion and disease prevention. He has performed thousands of exercise stress tests including nuclear stress testing for early diagnosis of heart disease. He certified completion of the University of Iowa’s Lipid Disorders Treatment program, and incorporates these principles into his daily practice. Dr. Meeker also screens for colon cancer and is a member of the American Association of Primary Care Endoscopists. He has logged over 1400 colonoscopies at Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics and over 500 upper endoscopies; and in doing so, has provided early diagnosis of cancer and pre-cancerous problems many times.
A third area of interest for Dr. Meeker is sports medicine. He started the very successful sports medicine program that partners Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics with area school systems. In 2009 he was awarded the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s “Sports Medicine Specialists Award”. In high school, Dr. Meeker earned 10 varsity letters himself, and was an All-State linebacker, captain of a conference champion basketball team, and conference champion and school and conference record holder in the discus. He is in the Louisa-Muscatine High School Athletic hall of fame. Linda Meeker serves as a board member for the booster club. Both have donated countless volunteer hours.
Dr. Meeker received his undergraduate degree from Truman University and his medical degree from Des Moines University. His family practice residency was completed at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin affiliated with the University Of Wisconsin Medical School. Dr. Meeker has been designated Assistant Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at both medical schools in Iowa as well as North Dakota University. In his teaching activities he has hosted over 90 PA students, medical students and family medicine residents right here in Vinton.
Dr. Meeker with over 100,000 patient encounters in Vinton has considerable medical experience and he offers a wide range of services from before birth to geriatric care.
